You may have seen both Voltaren and Diclofenac on several websites over the last decade. The two pain medications commonly prescribed for arthritis and pain, like all prescription medicines, are not without side effects, and not all of them are harmless. In this article, we will be looking at side effects of each of these medicines, at what they are, when they came in the original form, and at what they can be purchased with over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.
Voltaren is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) analgesic with a COX-2 selectivity profile that combines cyclooxygenase (COX) 2-selectivity and COX selectivity. This selectivity allows it to act as a selective COX-1, COX-2 inhibitor, acting by inhibiting the activity of the COX enzyme that produces pain mediators. Voltaren is available OTC under the brand name Diclofenac.
Diclofenac is an arthritis pain medicine containing the active ingredient diclofenac diethylamine. Unlike Voltaren, Diclofenac is not without side effects. The most common side effects of Diclofenac are a) stomach upset, and b) headache and toothache. In addition to these stomach upset, symptoms can include skin rashes, such as itching, fever, and skin irritation. Contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms persist for a longer duration.
Is Diclofenacharmful?
In some cases, a sudden loss of vision or hearing, sometimes life-threatening, can be a sign of a serious condition. These sudden changes to vision and/or hearing can be a sign of more serious conditions such as optic neuropathy, retinitis pigmentosa, retinitis neovul®n, or any other condition that causes inflammation or irritation of the blood vessels in the eyes. If you notice any of these effects, tell your doctor right away: a) your vision may be temporarily amygdala-dependent, which may cause dizziness, or b) you may have a seizure. A seizure is a medical event that occurs suddenly when you no longer have a number of muscles in your arm or leg that are your normal way of speaking or thinking.
